Screen Wars!

Screen Wars!

There’s an ongoing battle in our household over screens. By screens I mean television, video games, computers and iPads, basically any electronic device that has a screen. The Canadian Pediatric Society recommends that time in front of the television or computer should be limited to no more than two hours a day[i]. Research shows that more time than this is correlated with poor social skills, learning problems, short attention spans, obesity and sleep problems[ii]. Our children’s brains are developing and what they are exposed to has an impact on how their brains develop. It’s pretty clear that some of the

The Lies We Tell Ourselves

We are storytellers, we humans. It is one of the things that truly set us apart from the other mammals on this planet. We love to tell stories and we love to hear stories. Some of our stories endure for thousands of years, while others are as fleeting as the wind. Stories are so intricately woven into our lives that we often don’t even recognize them. We call some stories ‘news’, some history, some gossip, sometimes we even call them facts. These are the stories of our culture. We also have our own personal stories. Some we repeat to others,

Getting the love that you want

I went to see Amma this summer. She is known as the hugging saint and she travels the world hugging all who wish to receive one from her. She has devoted her life to improving the world through love and compassion. She grows organic food to give away; she founded a university and a hospital. She teaches love and compassion to all who will listen. Receiving Amma’s embrace is liked nothing I have experienced before. And I think there are no words that can describe it. I have been reading ‘The Voice of Knowledge’ by Don Miguel Ruiz. He says

Self Love or Self Indulgence?

I have been thinking about the difference between self love and self indulgence for the past few weeks. I think self love is a vital ingredient to experience true joy, compassion and love for others. I truly believe that we can love others only as deeply as we can love ourselves. In Mark 12:31, Jesus says the second most important Commandment is ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ I like to look at the Commandments as spiritual laws just as there are laws of physics, rather than as rules to follow. Understood in this way, this Commandment comes to

Mmmmm, Coffee

I stopped consuming caffeine on a daily basis this year. It took me by surprise, to be honest. I’ve tried many times in the past to give it up , without success. The first to go was coffee. One day I just didn’t want it. The thought entered my mind that I wouldn’t be drinking coffee any more and the next day I stopped. It was a strange feeling because I have always enjoyed coffee. Not just the the taste but the ritual of it too. I would get up in the morning and in the solitary quiet, I would
